WE CAN DANCE 3.0
We Can Dance is an act of celebration; it’s an accompanied solo; or rather, an invitation to dance; or even, perhaps, also a disco. This piece moves between what’s possible and what’s forbidden by means of the laws that regulate or ban the act of dancing in different places, in order to question where personal and external limits lie.
It begins at that first step we take just before we start dancing. Once you start, it’s hard to stop, you start moving, get into that disco groove. At what point does movement become dance? What happens when it occurs in places where it’s forbidden?
A staged game constructed from the cogs represented by three bodies on stage: the dj body, the lighting body, and the dancing body.
In 2016 I started this piece, I wondered if I could build a disco space with my body while at the same time researching about laws that were a bit absurd. Suddenly one day all the dance spaces disappeared and the piece took on a new meaning and new purpose. Lately I have been thinking that I only make this one piece in my life, the one for dancing, and that what happens is that it keeps transforming, that every time I perform it it's different because everything has changed, my body, the music, the space, the disposition, those who accompany me, the exterior. That despite all these changes there is something that remains, a kind of essence that keeps it alive because I never know what is going to happen. That it is always an adventure into the unknown, in which I am slowly and insistently opening a hole towards the overflow. That my mission is to keep it alive, even if everything around me falls apart. And that in the end it is a representation of life. That if I can keep doing it, it's because I'm still alive. And because I'm a tall pussy and I do grand battements in a disco cabaret version. That it is not a solo because in it I invoke all those people with whom we have ever danced, all those people with whom we share that moment of intimacy that is dancing, to dance again, together. Those present with those absent. And to summon that very moment when for a few seconds we were profoundly free.
